Art Integrated Art Curriculum |
Homework Assignments |
The Integrated Arts Program begun at The Manor School
two years ago. The first year, we used funding from the Virgin Islands
Council on the Arts (VICA), the V.I. Lottery, and ITT in conjunction with
private donations to secure a Music and Performing Arts teacher and
purchase instruments. In 2010, we again used VICA funding to secure a phenomenal Music and Performing Arts educator, Linda Garvin, who will be staying with us this current school year.
Ms. Garvin’s experience allowed The Manor School to win first place in the performance aspect at the competitive “Reef Rap” during the St. Croix Reef Jam. Manor School students also competed in “Poetry Out Loud.” Our student’s excitement about their performances doubled the attendance of parents and students at our campus spring “Renaissance Fair.”
The 2010 grant also brought Manor alumna, Johanna Bermudez to campus during the Diaspora Unit of the Integrated Arts Program. It also took twenty-two students to Laurant Alfred and Padric Coursey’s recording studio in Christiansted to see and hear how music is transformed from live performance to master mixing board to CD output.
The efforts thus far have...
-
helped to change attitudes and increase self-esteem on Manor’s campus.
Students have changed from not wanting to perform before an audience, to eager to express themselves.
-
been successful in uniting visual art, poetry/prose, music, and the performing arts for more diversified expression and discipline.
-
taken advantage of the cooperative attitude of the middle and upper school arts and liberal arts teachers
in order to foster the development of individual units towards a completely integrated curriculum.
-
created a large, clean room for the music and performing arts program.
Our goals for 2011-12 include:
Continued classes everyday in music, performing art, or visual art.
The development of two new Integrated Arts units: Potentiality (9th) and Energy (8th) with continued cooperation and participation from our entire junior high and high school staff. Each year we will develop additional units, keeping the former in place, until every grade level has one unit. Diaspora was our first integrated curriculum unit, developed for the 10th grade.
Introduction of after school lessons in guitar, drums, and keyboard.
An Exhibit and Artist/Student Panel Discussion on Portraits of Our Future
(committed participating artists are John Jones, acrylic; Sue Snow,
oil; Mike Nissman, photography; Blair Coughlin, watercolor; Cindy
Male; mixed media; Elisa Mackay, collage; Doreen Walsh, fabric;
Therese Trudeau, marker).
The continued acquisition and expansion of instruments available for student use.
The further upgrades of the new music / performing arts room and renovation of an open outdoor building for educational / performance areas (Outdoor pavilion has been pressure washed and painted this summer).
We look forward to an even more productive year in 2011-12, as our program gains momentum and realization of the goals begin to be even more visible.
